Ulster Rugby is delighted to confirm that versatile forward, David McCann, has signed a new two-year contract extension with his home province.
The 25-year-old back-rower has established himself as a vital member of the Senior Men’s team over recent seasons following his progression through the Ulster Rugby Academy.
The former Ireland U20s captain has been an ever-present force in Richie Murphy’s side this season, featuring in every BKT United Rugby Championship and EPCR Challenge Cup match thus far.
His availability and versatility are huge strengths, making him a reliable option in any of the back row positions.
A force around the breakdown, McCann’s ball carrying, tackling and work rate make him a well-rounded back rower in the modern game.
Earlier this campaign, McCann was called up to the Ireland ‘A’ squad who faced Spain back in November, in recognition of his performances this season.
McCann’s displays in the Ulster jersey have previously seen him named the Bank of Ireland Ulster Rugby Men’s Player of the Year and Rugby Writer’s Player of the Year following a standout 2023/24 season.
Commenting on his new deal, McCann added:
“I am pleased to be continuing at Ulster, the team has shown this season the journey we are on and I am proud to be a part of that.
“I want to push myself to play at the highest level, be successful doing this and Ulster is a great place to achieve those goals.
“I’m excited for the next two seasons and how far the club can go.”
Ulster Rugby’s General Manager, Rory Best said:
“We are delighted to have secured Dave’s renewal for the next couple of years.
“He is an important player within the team, who always brings a massive amount of commitment and energy on the pitch. His ability to perform across the back row positions is a huge benefit for us as we attack both competitions in the URC and in Europe.
“Dave has a lot of playing experience now for his age and the challenge for him is to keep pushing on and develop his leadership qualities in the years ahead.”
David McCann signs fresh two-year extension | Ulster Rugby
Ulster Rugby is pleased to announce that versatile back, Jake Flannery, has signed a one-year extension with the province until the summer of 2027.
The 26-year-old from Bansha, Tipperary joined Ulster Rugby from provincial rivals, Munster Rugby, back in 2022, and has made over 30 appearances for the senior side.
His ability to perform in multiple positions across the backline have seen him play at fly half, centre and full-back, forming an important part of one of the most exciting attacks in both the United Rugby Championship and the EPCR Challenge Cup.
Commenting on the extension, Flannery said:
‘‘I’m happy to be signing on for another season with Ulster. I feel I am progressing and enjoying a run of fitness after a challenging season last year.
“Our team is playing with more confidence, and the attack has been really clicking, which is fun to be a part of. We are a close group and I’m very motivated to play my part in chasing success in the future.’’
Ulster Rugby General Manager, Rory Best added:
“Jake is a very skilful backline player, with the key strength of being able to play in a range of positions, which is vital in modern rugby. His playmaking is a strong part of his game and suits the free-flowing structure of our attack.
“He has shown what impact he can bring with some positive performances this season and we see him remaining an important member of the senior side moving forward.”
