I always hear about Tom’s weird throwing technique, but this is the first time I have seen it in detail. I’m no expert, but that does look weird. It look like the balls actually going forward a bit there. Any idea why he throws like that? has anyone asked him ( eg press briefing etc)?
I’ve never heard him asked about it. Mark Robson and Stephen Ferris can’t stop talking about it on commentary.
I’m no technician either but it just doesn’t look repeatable under pressure. The angle of the throw has to be different (slightly) when throwing to front/middle/back/over the top. Also when they are on the opposite side of the pitch compared to this clip, the ball has to fly over the opposition forwards to get to its target. I would think that like a goal-kicker, having a very simple action that can be repeated under stress would be the key. Also, it’s not working! He gets dinged for not straight at least once in almost every game. The one he did in the first half of the Leinster game cost us a solid chance of a try.
